Welcome to Oddburg! A quirky little town with vibrant colors and funky looking buildings. Oddburg was my third portfolio piece at The Game Assembly and I worked on this project for 3 to 4 weeks halftime. I wanted to create a town with a lot of character and so I did. The original idea for this project came from the name of my game project group, Stupid Town after a couple of people from the group discussed what Stupid town actually would look like.
The inspiration for the art direction of this project came from Alariko https://www.artstation.com/alariko. I found their art on pinterest and fell in love so a big shout out to them for their cool art and for inspiring me.
Had a blast working on this project. Learned a lot of new things and had a great time exploring the setting and art style. So much fun to keep adding little details and easter eggs and I would have loved to create more than just this small part of the town but maybe that is something for a future project.
To create this funny little town I used both tiling materials for the buildings and hand painted unique assets for decorative elements. I also set up a shader to get a cartoon outline. The shader is based on a tutorial by Reality Adrift Studio on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7DpYnWQbKI&ab_channel=RealityAdriftStudio. Everything is modeled in Maya and then presented in UE4. I used Substance Designer for the tiling material and Substance Painter to texture the rest of the assets.
A big thank you to classmates and educators who helped me with feedback and advice.
I used a plugin for Unreal Engine 4 that enables you to link substance designer files to UE4 and change exposed parameters in engine.
